Founded in 1915, Allison was a speedway team company. In 1920, it's name has been changed to Allison Engineering Company. In 1929, Allison incorporated General Motors by buying the company.

In 1946, Allison developed and produced it's first gear wheel CD850 model for military tanks.

Allison and Detroit Diesel departments was united in 1970 but in 1987, a year after the sale of Detroit Diesel, Allison Gear Wheel was founded.

In 2007, Allison Gear Wheels has been bought by Carlye Group & Onex Corporation
